Police K-9

PACO

In November 2009 K-9 Paco was purchased from K-9 Concepts Inc. in Broussard LA.  K-9 Paco was 3 years old at this time and was imported from Holland.  As a KNPV certified K-9, Paco started training at eight weeks old and was titled at 2 1/2 years old.  Paco was named by local elementary school students atfer he was purchased by the city of Mauldin.

As a police service dog, Paco assist the police department in tracking/trailing, narcotics detection, building search, area search, article search, handler protection and aggression control of suspects.  K-9 Paco helps the Mauldin Police Department as a force multiplier by allowiing other officers to be free for calls for service while he is working.  Paco is used to assist other municipalities in the area with his detection abilities.  As a police service dog, Paco takes part in public demonstrations to allow the community to see his keen sense of smell and agility required to perform his duties.  Paco has been certified as a detection and patrol dog with the National Police Canine Association and the North American Police Caniine Association.

K-9 Paco’s handler is Corporal George Miller.  Officer Miller had been a K-9 handler with the city of Mauldin since 2005 and is the K-9 Unit supervisior.

ALEX

K-9 Alex’s handler is Corporal Andy Hamilton.  Officer Hamilton has been a K-9 handler with the city of Mauldin since December 2006.

CHICA

In January of 2010 Mauldin Police traveled to Custom Canine Unlimited Kennels to select a new Police Service Dog. At that time canine “Chica” was chosen from many possibilities. At the time she was selected she was 21 months old.

As a police service dog,  K-9 Chica  is trained in tracking suspects, evidence finds, building searches, area searches, and handler/citizen protection work. Police K-9’s are able to search buildings and locate items, while utilizing fewer officers in the process.  This allows officers to remain available for other calls for service.  In this capacity K-9 Chica is used on a daily basis in assisting the City of Mauldin as well as multiple agencies throughout the upstate. Along with the work related aspects, K-9 Chica has done a wide variety of demonstrations to various community groups, schools and businesses.

K-9 Chica’s handler Is Corporal R. Herron.  Officer Herron has been K-9 Chica’s handlers since she came to the department in February of 2010.
